According to data from the 2024 Population Census, Denia’s population growth is almost entirely due to the arrival of foreigners. The autochthonous population of Denia has only 18 more people than a year ago. In total there are 1,124 more people than in January 2023, reaching 49,047 official inhabitants.
Where do foreigners come from?
The largest foreign population in the municipality is from Colombia, which also experienced another spectacular growth during these twelve months: they have crossed the barrier of 2,000 inhabitants (now 2,090) when twelve months ago there were barely 1,600. No other country has grown more.
It was in 2022 that Colombia overtook the United Kingdom as the majority nationality in the capital of the Marina Alta. The British, on the other hand, are at a standstill: there are now even two less than a year ago, down to 1,432. Germany is in third place (at one time it also topped this ranking) and has increased slightly in the last year to 1,400.
The fourth nationality is Ukraine, with 1,155. Its growth occurred throughout 2022 when the population of this origin multiplied as a result of Russia’s invasion. Now this increase is no longer so spectacular, although in just twelve months 122 more people have come from that war-torn nation.
The top 10 is completed by Romania (whose group is made up of exactly the same people as a year ago), Russia, France (both countries have experienced very moderate increases), Italy (which, on the other hand, has seen a more notable increase), the Netherlands and Morocco. With the exception of Morocco and Colombia, the rest of these top ten positions are occupied by European countries.
However, among those nationalities that have more than one hundred representatives in Denia, there are already more diverse places, including Asians such as China and India or Central Americans, such as Cuba and the United States.
Curiosities
Throughout 2023, people from Bangladesh, Cape Verde or Comoros who were not here last year settled here. On the other hand, the statistics no longer include residents from Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uganda or Burundi who were here before. Finally, there are two people who are simply citizens of the world: they declare themselves stateless.
Denia – a climate favourable for centenarians
The average age between 45 and 60 years is around the highest. And it is the 56 year olds who are the most numerous, a total of 863, while babies aged 0 to 1 years only 205 are counted.
The number of centenarians is striking: a total of 16 are 100 years old or more. One of them is 107 years old. Two other people, in this case a man and a woman, are 104 years old.
